While a regular game of blackjack is played against a dealer, giving no opportunity of competition among the players, blackjack tournaments are something completely different. While the rules of blackjack at a casino are usually the same for regular play and for a tourney, right chip management becomes an increasingly important issue during a competition. After all, it doesn’t matter how much you win at a tournament if your opponent wins more.
Most of the casinos nowadays are more than ready to offer free blackjack tourneys to draw more customers. The prizes are usually small, but considering no entry fee, they are worth playing. On the other hand, there are also free tournaments exclusively for invited guests, who are chosen by a casino among the more frequent customers. At such events the prizes may be quite big, featuring special gifts and bonuses for all participants. But an average blackjack tourney has an entry fee that a casino would use to reward the winners. The more entry money goes to a prize pool the better, while an ideal tournament is played for the whole amount gathered from the participants.
There are two basic types of tournaments when it comes to wagering. In the first kind a player has to wager his or her own money, paying for the losses and receiving the winning. Obviously, the player who ends up with more cash is the winner. In the other kind of a tourney, a set amount of chips is given to every participant in the beginning of each round of blackjack. That’s when the most interesting decisions take place. Once again the winner is the person to have more chips at the end of a round.
A blackjack tournament is usually played on several tables. The number of tournament tables is determined by the number of players. Usually the more players there are, the more rounds they have to go through to win. Every round is played at a table with 5 or 6 competitors for a set amount of time or a designated number of hands. In the end only one player from a table moves to the next round, while in the final round a number of gamblers may be rewarded according to their tournament position after the last hand is played.
A regular tournament players may be approximately classified into those who bet a lot from the very beginning of a round to grasp a position of leadership early on, and those who wait until the last hands, carefully calculating how much exactly they have to bet considering the amounts already won by more aggressive players. Of course it all depends on the personality of a player and the cards dealt, but a gambler should always remember that it is much easier to win with one big bet than with a number of small ones. Constantly pushing your luck never helps, so watch closely how much the leader is betting and try to grasp the first good opportunity to double down. A successful tournament player is most attentive during the last several hands of a round, especially if it is a final round. You can always expect a lot of unexpected moves from desperate players during the last hand, particularly if the tourney is played with special tournament chips that have no value outside the competition. It is not rare at the last hand of a blackjack tournament round for all the players to wager everything they’ve got. In this situation you should always make sure that you retain at least a little amount of chips, so that you may win even if everybody loses their bets.
